A Change of Plans

Has anyone noticed the terrible weather that set in a couple weeks ago and hasn't left yet? Unfortunately for us, it has greatly altered our Christmas plans. With a late start to winter, I feel it is making up for lost time by constantly snowing and snowing and blowing and icing all the day long. We were planning on leaving bright and early Tuesday morning to drive up to Washington for Christmas. But Monday it did nothing but dump snow everywhere, and Tuesday most of the highways were closed down that we need to take to get to Washington. So guess where we are now? Still HERE in PROVO. Ugh Provo. So this is the first time I spent Christmas in Provo. Right now our plans are to try again this Sunday when a minute break in the weather is looking somewhat hopeful. Luckily we do have some family here in Utah, so we were able to spend the day with my sibling and his wife, and then got dinner from my uncle and his family. Here are some pictures of how our Christmas went. We got ...

Adjusting to the Cold...I mean Hot.

We have now spent a whole week living in our new apartment. During this week, I have made some less than pleasant discoveries. It seems that my body has adjusted to living in a non-furnaced place. A non-heated place. My body has been living in such conditions for over a year and a half, and apparently that is a long enough time to adjust, internally and externally. Now I have moved into a more modern place, that comes along with a furnace. It heats the place. And also dries out the air. So I have had unusually dry skin all day every day, and have had blood in my nose (sorry if that grosses you out) for the past week. Not bad, just when I blow it there's some red. My body is trying to recuperate and become used to a dryer, warmer climate. I'm hoping it will be a smooth transition. I am also finding myself being overly warm lately. I sleep too hot, I sit too hot, I am just too hot, more often. It is a weird experience.

The end has come.

Hm. Well, I just wrote a post, and then it errored and deleted itself. Now I have to write it again. But it probably won't be too long, who likes to type things twice? I basically just wanted to announce that I am DONE!!!!!! done, done and DONE with my bachelor's degree. I turned in my last paper last night, and now I am officially done! (Assuming I pass everything, so I guess it's not technically official, but still. I'll pass). After that part I went on to list some things I could do to fill my time. But, I'm not going to again. So that is all you get. To know that I am graduated from college.

Moving, Missing, and Getting

Moving: A word of advice for anyone who ever wants to move anywhere: Don't move during a snow storm, unless you absolutely have to. Yesterday was our big move day, and it just so happened to be during the first real snow storm of the year. We woke up early in the morning and saw clear blue skies. We were optimistic. Then about 10, when we were starting, we got a call from one of our friends who was going to come down from Draper to help us. He was calling to tell us he wouldn't be coming because he was basically snowed in. Oh crap, that means it's coming this way. HURRY! Get everything out before it hits! That is what our conversations turned to. We used two little cars to move boxes with, our 4runner and a friend's Tahoe for the big things. We were able to get everything inside one of these vehicles except for the box springs of our bed. This we tied to the top of the Tahoe. We rushed over to our new apartment and unloaded, just as the snow started picking up pretty...

End of College

Last night I went to my last and final class of my college career. I spent my last precious hours playing a Persian instrument. It's called a santur. This is what a santur looks like: This is how you play a santur: This is how I spent my whole semester, Wednesday nights, shooting my brains out. I just have to admit, I did not like my teacher much. It was an easy A class, but was it worth it? I don't know. I was constantly being bombarded by anti-everything propoganda. I was the only one in the class who knew how to read and follow music, making it hard to learn new music when the teacher expects everyone to read and just pick it up when no one does. Then the teacher would say, "Just listen to me play it and copy what I am playing." He wouldn't follow the beat, or the notes, that were listed on the music page. He had it all in his head, apparently wrong. But no once could just pick it up by listening either. It was a class of 8 people, and to this day our teache...

The Hunt Is Over

I am pleased to announce that our search for an apartment is now over. We have a place to go, and it's even early enough that we can still go to Washington for Christmas. I have to say it's amazing how the Lord works. About 2 minutes after I prayed this morning and asked for help in finding an apartment soon, I got the call saying we had been approved, all we needed to do was get the deposit to her. I called my parents afterwards and she told me that all week she had been praying, asking that we would find an apartment this week. This morning when she prayed, she told the Lord "Today is Saturday, the last day of the week!" A few minutes later is when I got the call. About an hour after I signed the contract, I got another call from a girl in our ward who is managing an apartment complex and told me she had an available apartment that she wanted to give to me before posting it online. I told her thanks but that we'd already signed somewhere else. I just think it...

I.S. Classics

Over the years at working here at Independent Study, some funny things have come about that need to be shared. And yes, these are all real. Silly Questions: Can you fax me a fedex envelope? So fax? Is that like faster than regular mail? I’m taking a high school course and I want to request a final. Do I click on the high school course button or the university one? You say you’re sending all the materials. Are you sending me a computer too? How do I use an e-mail? My son is blond with blue eyes and really athletic. Can he take your courses? Funny Names: Jerusalem and his daughter Bethlehem Fancy Davis Egyptacio Amazing Sales Manly Dexter Holds-the-Enemy Weird Things People Have Said To Us: I haven’t been satisfied lately. Can you satisfy me? How can I ever repay you? Ammunition? Guns? (From an Army Sergeant) I love you! I am going to kill him, I’m going to kill him (and then you hear indiscriminate screaming in the background) Do you have kids? Don’t ever have kids. Kids are evil. Fun...

Apartment Hunting

The past few weeks we have been frantically trying to find a new apartment to move into. We only have until the 31st to get out of ours. But we would like to get out by the 19th-20th so that we can travel to Washington for Christmas. As this date gets closer and closer, we get more nervous and frantic. And I just have to say, I really really hate a trend that I have discovered. This was not the case in any apartments I have previously lived in, but now it seems that EVERY single place we have looked at and decided it might be decently okay to live there, we have to fill out an application to live there. We can't just say, "We want this place let me sign a contract." Instead we have to try to sell ourselves as the best candidate and fill out an application and sit on our thumbs for days while we wait for their decision. It is SO LAME. I am beginning to hate it. I just want to say yes, I want this place and we are moving in now. Instead of applying, applying, applying, n...

Clarification

I think I need to make one thing clear about the last email I posted on here about the apartment. We are definitely NOT moving there. This thing just screams scam to me. I just thought it would be funny to see how lame the email was. And don't fool yourself, we couldn't afford a $1200 deposit and rent of $900.

New Place

So you know how we're getting kicked out of our apartment? Well we found a winner of a new apartment to move into. Meet our new landlord! BYU

Below is an email I received today from BYU: "Congratulations! We’re excited you’ll be arriving soon at Brigham Young University . We are the Office of First-Year Experience , and we are here to help make your transition to BYU as smooth as possible. We would like to share with you some important information and helpful hints before you arrive on campus. This is the first of four “Did You Know?” emails we’ll be sending your way before the semester begins." I thought I was graduating in a couple of weeks....from college, not high school. Maybe I've been wrong this whole time!

A couple of days of randomness

I have a couple stories from the past couple days I thought would be fun to share. Yesterday I had a job interview!!! It is for my boss's job at Independent Study. She is having a baby, so I want her job. We shall see how that turns out. After the interview I was waiting in the parking lot for Jarom to come pick me up. While I was waiting there, a lost traveler asked me for directions to the Wilkenson parking lot. I told her to take a right out of the parking lot, then a right at the stop light, and blah blah blah. She thanked my and proceeded on her trek. I then became aware of why she was lost. She took a left out of the parking lot. Not a right, a left. I said right. One left does not equal two rights. It must be hard to get places if you get your lefts and rights mixed up. Poor lady. Yesterday we also decided to drive up to view an apartment that is for rent. We are getting kicked out of ours since our landlord's daughter wants to live there. It is kind of funny cuz m...
Thanks to a fellow blogger, I found out about an amazing sale today at Albertson's. The sale was if you buy one Sara Lee pumpkin, apple, or cherry pie, you receive another one free, PLUS two cartons of Breyers ice cream. Quite the deal, yes? I thought so too. So I rushed to Albertson's today after class since the sale ends tomorrow. I was worried about there not being any left, but I was lucky enough to find two cherry pies left, pushed back against the wall on the bottom shelf. Not to worry, their expiration dates aren't until July 2009. I picked out my two favorite ice creams, and off I was to the register. I thought I was so frugal when my $6.40 total rang up. When I got home, we decided to partake of our new bounty. We promptly threw one pie in the freezer, and opened the other. I always thought that this was how pies were supposed to look.. . Mmmm, looks tasty, doesn't it? Wait until you see what ours looked like! Mmmm, fresh out of the box! No, that green ...

A Night in the Life of the Decker's

I wish to write about our night last night. It came with a few interesting..quirks. First, we found out just how un-sound proof our ceiling is. Apparently one of the girls upstairs has turned nocturnal, because all night long she was texting on her phone. She even had the phone on vibrate, but we could hear every time the phone vibrated through the ceiling. This happened every 2-3 minutes for about... 6 hours. Jarom never could fall asleep, so at 1 am he gave up and left. I would feel bad complaining to them though, because she really wasn't being inconsiderate. I 'm sure she had no idea that the people under her could hear her vibrating phone. But we could. The second weird thing was a dream that I had. I often have weird dreams. Sometimes they are pretty scary, sometimes they make no sense. I'm sure everyone can relate. Last night I had a dream about a monstrous, ginormous, furry bee. It flew into our bedroom. It was probably a quarter of a foot big. And fat. And fuzzy. A...

Anyone want to buy a dual heating oven?

Yesterday I made cinnamon rolls. I was able to get them most of the way done before I had to leave, so I asked Jarom to finish and put them in the oven for me so they'd be done by the time I got back. We were bringing them to my brother's house for dinner. When I got back home, this is how Jarom greeted me. "Hey! I always thought it was just your cooking, but I think it might be the OVEN'S fault that food burns all the time." ... Jarom still doesn't see anything wrong with this sentence. I only hope I am not the only one out there who thinks there are so many better ways this could have been phrased. He then proceeded to explain how he came to this new conclusion. He put two pans of cinnamon rolls in the oven at the same time. One on the right, one on the left. He put the oven 50 degrees under what the recipe said, and cooked it for half the time. (This is something we always have to do in order to keep our baked foods edible.) When he pulled them out, all ...

Stalkernet: A Tool or a Weapon?

Right now I am taking a weird Music of Persia class. It consists of about 8 people, and once a week we all sit around playing weird Persian instruments. (Yes, I know it is lame, but come on. This is my last semester and I didn't want hard classes). There are only like 2 or 3 people who actually can play and follow along the notes. The rest of the people hit about 1 note for every 20. We sound terrible. But that is okay, easy "A" right? Last night, instead of having normal class, my teacher wanted us to go to a concert where people who play these instruments professionally would be performing. It's really just because my teacher was performing and probably wanted his students to oogle over his talent. Here is the problem, the concert was in Salt Lake City. I had no interest in spending 4 hours of my night driving to and from this concert that I didn't even want to attend anyway, spend $40 in gas for my gas guzzler, and hate my life. So I decided not to go. Esp...

Happy Halloween

Here are some pictures from our Halloween Party. Most of them are blurry...dang it. I think it was the bad lighting. Oh well.

Alchohol isn't Poisonous, Right?

Wednesday nights I have a class from 7-8:30. It is a pretty lame. I decided not to go to it tonight, especially since I did so well on an unrelated midterm this afternoon. So, Jarom and I decided to make smores. Instead of trying to hunt down some firewood and go outside into the cold to create the fire needed for smores, we decided to have an indoor fire. So we burned some alchohol, cooked our marshmallows over the alchohol fire, and gobbled up the delicious smores. I am just hoping there is nothing dangerous about cooking over alchohol...anyone know? I guess it's too late now. And here is a random picture of our nephew showing us how to play Wii boxing!

YES on Proposition 8

Failure to pass Proposition 8 will hurt children. If gay marriage remains legal, public schools will put it on equal footing with traditional marriage. Children will likely receive "age appropriate" information about sexual relations within heterosexual and homosexual marriages.Failure to pass Proposition 8 will hurt churches. The court's decision will inevitably lead to conflicts with religious liberty and free speech rights. Society will become more and more hostile to traditional beliefs about marriage and family. Over time, greater acceptance of nontraditional marriage will be demanded of all people. This could impact the ability of any religion to teach and practice its beliefs. Including adoption agencies.A YES vote will not hurt gays. In California, the law provides for marriage-related benefits to be given to civil unions and domestic partnerships. Proposition 8 does not diminish these benefits. For your information: On Friday, October 10th, 2008 a first-grade cla...

A prank? A joke? A necessity?

I have no idea what is going on. Why is this happening to us???? A few weeks ago, Jarom came out of work to come home. (He works from 3am to about 7am) When he got to the car, he noticed that both side mirrors had been pushed all the way forward into the car, completely unusable. Hmm, that's weird. So he pushed them back and readjusted his angle and came home. Last week, I got into the car to come to work, while at home, and noticed the SAME THING! Both mirrors had been pushed completely forward like someone in the car had been trying to squeeze through a tight spot. Jarom did not do it, I did not do it, WHO DID IT?!? This morning, it happened again, for the third time. Sometime in between Jarom getting home at 7am and me leaving at 7:45am, some mirror bandit comes by and pushes our mirrors out of work? What is that? Who does that?!?! LEAVE ME ALONE!

Proposition 8

In yesterday's Daily Universe, there was a letter to the editor regarding Proposition 8. I would like to comment on this letter. First of all, I understand that the paper tries to be unbiased on controversial issues that people write about. I know that they like to put both sides of the issue in the paper so people can see and express their honest opinions. However, I really feel that when someone writes something so obviously anti-Mormon, that they should not publish this piece. We are a private, church-run institution, and I don't feel that we should have to read crap that blatantly attacks what the church stands for. Proposition 8 is what will be voted for in November in California regarding same-sex marriages. The proposition would add a very clear definition of marriage. The definition would state that marriage only pertains to a man and a woman, not two members of the same sex. Here is a copy of what this person's letter said: "I am appalled at the numbe...

Homeless College Student??

Yesterday I had an interesting..um, experience? I don't really know what to call it. I got out of my first class a little early. So I went to my next class in the JSB auditorium to wait for it to begin. For those who don't know, this auditorium is huge. Probably one of the biggest on campus, if not the biggest. I picked one random, cozy looking seat and sat down. A couple moments later, I noticed, (this is going to be hard to describe), a girl who was sleeping on the ground in the row in front of me, tucked under the chairs so half of her was coming in to my aisle and overtaking my foot space. Her feet were coming through and her elbow. She even stretched and grabbed my foot in the process. AUGH! What do you do? So I just sat there and tried to ignore this weird stretching girl who was clearly not caring about the fact that people were coming in and sitting down all around her. About 10 minutes later, she finally got up onto her knees, on the ground, looked around for...

Ever Wonder What to do With Free Time at Work?

Recently we have plunged into the slowest time of the year at work. This means that we go minutes upon minutes in between phone calls, leaving so many empty minutes to be filled with our creative juices. Some people use this time to complete homework for classes. Others, think of what if scenarios that they then try to prove... Today was another particularly long and boring day. There were three of us sitting at the front desk available to help any student who would come walking through the door. When no such students ever showed up, we began to talk about the baseball bat that is stored in our drawer at the front desk. Several months ago we had a training on what to do if a raving gunman comes into our building about to shoot everyone to death. Yeah, sound pretty morbid? It was. But I guess it's good to be prepared. We even learned how to play dead. Anyway, after this way too informative meeting, our director decided to make us a little more prepared by placing metal baseb...

Good and Bad Discoveries of the Week

This week we have discovered the secret to life in Provo!! I am serious, it's the best thing ever, and everyone who lives in or near Provo, must take advantage of this secret to life. 1. Go to the Winsong movie theater 2. Purchase a ticket for "Take" (preferably Matinee) 3. Preferably, do not watch this movie because it is a waste of time. But if you have nothing better to do with yourself, go ahead and watch it. 4. Take your movie stub to the dollar theater located by Costco in Orem 5. Finally, enjoy UNLIMITED free movies at this theater. That's right, I said UNLIMITED FREE MOVIES at the dollar theater. I know this sounds to good to be true, but it is oh so true. I have done it, and it works. Last night, we watched a free Indiana Jones from this movie ticket. It was amazing. The movie Take is pretty worthless, but the reward is priceless. Ok, so on to the bad discoveries of the week. I have recently become aware of the advantages and disadvantages that tag along with...

IT HAPPENED THIS WAY

I hope this will brighten your day. The following was published by an insurance company for internal distribution. These reports were submitted when policyholders were asked for a brief statement describing their particular accident. I tried to pick the best ones. Enjoy. "The other car collided with mine without giving warning of its intention." "I thought my window was down but found it was up when I put my hand through it." "A pedestrian hit me and went under my car." "I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my mother-in-law and headed over the embankment." "The accident occured when I was attempting to bring my car out of a skid by steering it into the other vehicle." "As I approached the intersection, a stop sign suddenly appeared in a place where no stop sign had ever appeared before. I was unable to stop in time to aviod and accident." "The telephone pole was approaching fast. I was attempting to sw...

Random Thoughts and Observations

As a news update, Jarom and I have finally been released as Sunday School teachers. We are now members of the activity committee. It's actually quite funny to me that this is what our new calling is. I will tell you why. Last year when we didn't have any calling yet, Jarom said to me "I bet we will be called to be Sunday School teachers." Why is that? "Because that's the calling I don't want the most right now. As you have guessed, we then got called to be sunday school teachers. This year, when we found out we were going to be released soon, Jarom said to me, "I bet we are going to be activities committee members." Why is that? "Because I've already been a sunday school teacher, so I know I won't get that calling, and activities committe is my next least favorite that I don't want to have." Well guess what? My husband is cursed. Or, the Lord truly does have a sense of humor! Actually, I have another story that proves...

Big Blob of Goodness

We live in the basement of a house. Our landlords were gracious enough to furnish this house for us poor newly weds who have no furniture. For the year and a half we have been married, we having been watching TV on someone else's couch, storing our pictures and books on someone else's bookshelves, and heating our food in someone else's microwave. Well, yesterday we made our first furniture purchase. We call it, our big blob of goodness. It is big, it is blobby, and it is good. It takes up a third of our living room, and we can run and launch ourselves on it like a pile of leaves. Fortunately, it is much cleaner and softer than leaves. You guessed it, it's a freaking huge love sac! Well, I don't actually think it's love sac brand, but it has a big tag on it that says "The Big Bag" and nothing else. And oh my, it's big. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get pictures of us taking it into the house, because it took both of us and all our body w...

Unfinished Business..from a year and a half ago

So this story is probably going to be pointless and boring to you, but since I haven't had anything to write about for awhile, I decided this was at least something! So about a year and a half ago, for those of you who haven't heard, Jarom and I got married. For the next few months, I scrambled around trying to change all my legal documents to my new last name. I changed my drivers license, my email address, and even my name at work. Unfortunately, there was one place I never did change it. Underneath our fax machine at work, we have folders for each employee so we can keep our notes, important faxes, and other important things stored in a safe place. My folder was still under the name of Gina Gray. Since this is a personal folder that only I use, I never saw the need to pull out the old tab and change it with a new one. So I didn't. This never presented a problem until yesterday. Unfortunately, I have now been at this job longer than all my fellow employees, so the...

My new sweet baby - Ginarom!

Ok, so we were really bored at work today, and this is the result. We all made babies. Personally, I think this one is kind of ugly, but if that's what he's gonna look like, guess I'm legally obligated to love him! What do you think about my little new baby Ginarom? MakeMeBabies.com - What will your baby look like?

Our Recent Projects

The first thing I would like to show off is Jarom and mine stained glass projects. We have both been working on separate pieces, I wonder if you can guess whose is whose. Ü Such a pretty heart Such a mean looking DECEPTICON The second thing, is finally what you have been long awaiting! Pictures of our car! After two weeks of trying to get it legal to drive, we are finally there. Some of the interesting road bumps along the way are as follows: -Had to get new tires, but got a steal of a deal (so shiny...) -Had to pass safety and emissions, but found out there were a couple crucial things out of place before it could pass: namely, the catalytic converter had been removed and must be replaced, as well as the DMV typed in our VIN number wrong on the title. Unfortunately, people aren't inclined to pass off your car in the title VIN doesn't match the car's VIN. So we had to wait for the new bad title to be mailed to us so we could bring it back to get a new good title maile...

My Epiphany--And Future Baby Names

My stake has been specially asked to take on the project of Family Name Indexing. This is a process of looking at all those old, hard to read microfilm, deciphering the hand writing and transferring it into type on a computer system that will last much longer. They say since we are a young stake, we are more computer inclined than the rest of the stakes in the world, so we should do it as much as we can. So this was what Jarom and I were doing today during Sunday School. There have often been times when I come across funny names that I suggest to Jarom for our future kids. Most of the time he doesn't think I am very funny. He seems to feel that kids with abnormal names have a traumatized life because no one can pronounce their names. (For some reason, non-mormons don't know where the name Jarom comes from, and they think it's kind of odd. Actually, it's worse when Mormons are the ones who ask him where his name comes from...we won't go there) Well, today I hit...

Ahem. Attention! I have an Announcement!

So, we bought......a CAR!!!!!! YAY!!!!! WE BOUGHT A CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It's been about a year now since we've had a working car. My feet have gotten a little tired. It was pretty fast and kind of unexpected, but I think it was worth it. We have casually been looking for awhile, and then we found a 1995 Toyota 4Runner for sale for 1650 that was just a few blocks away from us. We went and looked at it, drove it around, looked at the receipts that totaled around $5000 of replaced parts in the engine a few years ago, and decided to take it for $1500. After examining Blue Book's idea of how much this should cost, we figured it was a good deal, even though it needs new tires. So, no pictures for you right now. I have to clean it all up and make it shiny first. Then you will see pictures. Oh yeah, and there's only one other problem....The lights were left on all night, so now the battery is dead. At the moment, we can't start it. BUT, not to worry b...

Silly Students, Trix are for KIDS!

So I have a funny story. There is this guy at work who had a cheating situation. The student had copied his grade report from our website and pasted it into Word, changed a few grades and added a few that he hasn't even turned in yet. Then gave it to his counselor so he can graduate from summer school (since he already missed regular graduation). It was funny because he did this for two classes. We had them fax his copy to us so we could compare with the original. Before we even got it we knew he had changed it. We don't ever send this document out as verification and proof of grades cuz we know it can be changed so easily. Instead, we send something completely different. Anyway, we got it. One of the classes he did a pretty good job on. But the other one, he gave himself an A+ for one of the lessons (we don't have A+'s). But the best thing was that for two of the dates of completion for 2 different lessons, he put 7/32/08. So apparently there is a 32nd of July now! Yea...

The Sky Is Falling

Two stories for today. First, I was working on a stained glass project earlier today. I was cutting out a piece of glass, and ended up having the sharpest, pointy corner aimed right at myself. Somehow it slipped and put a puncture into my finger. I had gloves on, but the instant that I realized I cut myself, there was already blood coming out spread across my finger. (Sorry for the woozy among you). I went into the kitchen and Jarom cut off the glove from my hand. The whole thing was full of blood. I put a paper towel up against it to stop the bleeding, and pretty much the whole thing got soaked. It was amazing. I think I either got a really deep cut, or I hit an artery or something cuz it was like oozing out pretty dang fast. Anyway, after awhile of pressure I removed the towel to see the damage. I was actually half disappointed half relieved to see it. It's just the tiniest little mark. If you saw it, you probably would think I was over exaggerating and really got bit...
