My stake has been specially asked to take on the project of Family Name Indexing. This is a process of looking at all those old, hard to read microfilm, deciphering the hand writing and transferring it into type on a computer system that will last much longer. They say since we are a young stake, we are more computer inclined than the rest of the stakes in the world, so we should do it as much as we can.
So this was what Jarom and I were doing today during Sunday School. There have often been times when I come across funny names that I suggest to Jarom for our future kids. Most of the time he doesn't think I am very funny. He seems to feel that kids with abnormal names have a traumatized life because no one can pronounce their names. (For some reason, non-mormons don't know where the name Jarom comes from, and they think it's kind of odd. Actually, it's worse when Mormons are the ones who ask him where his name comes from...we won't go there) Well, today I hit the jackpot.
I was going along just normal, working on some Indian Population Records. Typing in:
Alice Smith
Jeff Gordon
Lucy Lee
Lots of normal names
Until I hit this one: Brian Blue Bird.
Here is a depiction of my thoughts at that moment: What? Does that really say "Blue Bird?" Am I reading that right? Maybe the cursive really says something else I just can't make out.
So I decided to look further down the list to see if anyone else's name followed this pattern. Here are some more things I saw:
"Black Feat" (yes, spelled wrong), "Golden Eagle", here's a good one, "He Who Parts His Hair", "Old Woman", "Indian", and "Iron Woman."
My suspicions had been confirmed. It really did say Blue Bird, and that one was a more normal one! So here comes my epiphany...Why do we name kids what we do? Where do our names come from? They don't mean anything! What the heck does GINA Mean? I have no idea. It's just a bunch of syllables and sounds thrown together. It makes much more sense to call someone by what they look like, act like, seem like, and such. That is a better description of THEM, as a person! So, look out my future kids! You will probably be haunted for the rest of...eternity. Oh, I can see it now. "Honey, this one looks like a wrinkly blob!" "And this one poops a lot!" He Who Poops A Lot....Catchy.
