Today is going to be one of those random blog days because I just have too many things to say that aren't at all related to each other.
#1. This one is most important. I GOT A JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally, after 8 months of searching, pouring through website after website, applying, writing, interviewing and getting turned down, I finally got one! Most of that 8 months I spent applying for office jobs, like with secretarial duties, or customer service jobs, or customer service management jobs. All of which I felt qualified for, but so did everyone else and their dog who applied to all the same jobs I did. And I was never #1. Finally, I started thinking about looking into becoming a substitute teacher. I was searching and searching, trying to find the requirements, or a place to apply, or anything. So I went to all three school district sites that are in Utah County and created a profile for myself, thinking that I could then look at the job board and apply for a sub job. But then I found there were NO sub jobs posted. There were all kinds of other jobs, lots were called Para Professionals that looked like teachers' aids and stuff like that, but no subbing. So I decided I may as well apply for all these while I'm at it. So I did. Eventually I figured out that the ONLY requirement that the schools around here have for their subs, is that they are not criminals. Really. That is it. If you want to be a sub, all you have to do is go to the district office and get fingerprinted and let them do a background check. Once that passes, you are free to get set up with their system that allows you to pick the jobs you want that are available. There is NO application. There is NO interview. Nothing. Nada. So I figured, hey, if all else fails, I should be able to do that because no one can tell me no! ha. So I set up an appointment for the finger printing just in case nothing else panned out. I figure subbing would be fun, but also annoying to have to constantly look for new jobs and sign up and hope you can keep your weeks full. I'd rather just know I have a job to go to everyday.
That same week I had three different schools call me to set up an interview. I went to one interview Thursday morning, then another Friday morning. By Friday afternoon, I had a job! So what is it that I will be doing? The official title is a 504 Aid. But I'm guessing most people don't know what a 504 is. A 504 is similar to an IEP which is basically the documentation needed for students who need any type of accommodations in their schooling. Like, maybe they need someone to read the test questions to them instead of reading them themselves. I would step in and do that for them. It was nice because I am familiar with these type of accommodations and IEP's and 504's because of my job at Independent Study. We worked with students like that all the time. Anyways, they were really excited about me and told me I was perfect, and I'm excited too. It shouldn't be too difficult, hopefully it's fun. I start on Thursday, the first day of school. I just think it's funny, or interesting at least, how my very first interview in the education field goes perfect, and the customer service stuff has been really difficult to get in this whole time. As I think about it, I think I will enjoy this a lot more than pushing paper, so I'm glad.
YAY!
Ok, this post turned out to be a lot longer than I expected, so I'm going to save my #2 and #3 points of randomness for another day.
