Yesterday we went to the BYU Men's Volleyball game, as we often do. If you ever watch them on BYU TV, you will probably see us occasionally sitting right behind the servers. This is where we usually sit and this is where we were sitting last night.
As usual, last night in between the 2nd and 3rd sets they had the BYU Creamery sponsored blimp come flying around the the audience, occasionally dropping a coupon for, as they advertised, free ice cream from the creamery. At the same time, there were a few audience members on the court attempting to serve the ball over the net in a semi-straight fashion to hit a target on the other side and win a gift certificate.
The blimp veered away from the audience and over the middle of the court, right above these servers, right in front of us. And then it dropped a coupon, who knows if it was on purpose or not. The servers were not paying attention to the tiny piece of paper that fluttered past them to the ground, they were just watching their volleyball's fly off in wild directions. Finally one of them saw it, reached down and picked it up, and then tossed it into the basket of volleyballs.
Jarom pointed it out to me and urged me to hop the row of people sitting in front of us, and then hop over the padding that served as a barrier between the court and the players, reach in and grab it. No one was getting it, or even paying attention to it, and I knew where it was. All that was between us was a hip height level of foam I had to jump over. I was in a dilemma, should I be tactless and jump right out into the court that I wasn't invited on for all to see me dig around in the volleyball basket for a cheap thing of ice cream? Well it was BYU Creamery ice cream, which is quite yummy...
Before I had the courage to make up my mind, the serving challenge ended and the ball boy started pushing the volleyball cart back over to the side of the court, right at the end of the row I was sitting in.
With one more nudge from Jarom and also our old man friend we sit with, I started making my way over to the cart. I got next to it, saw the ball boy look at me curiously, looked into the bottom and saw the coupon, and went for it. I reached in and pulled it out. I wanted to be somewhat kosher so I asked him if I could keep it. I don't think he really knew what was going on and just shrugged his soldiers.
I was so proud of myself and walked back to show my coveted coupon to everyone, and then I actually looked at it. They had lied! It wasn't a coupon for free ice cream, it was a coupon for a free gallon of milk! MILK! That's not exciting! I wanted ice cream! Our friend then pointed out I could make my own ice cream with the milk I got from them. Wow. Who gives away milk as a prize???
