Demolition Derby

The last couple of weeks I have started wondering if we are turning into Rednecks, I would like to think not. But we have gone to some pretty funny "redneck" activities. This past Saturday was the demolition derby in Riverton. It was very entertaining. I was laughing the entire time.

To give you a picture of what happens there, you sit in bleachers surrounding a dirt pit. (The same dirt pit, in fact, that the rodeo was in). Five or six cars drive out into the dirt pit that have obviously already been through some abuse. They have their bumpers chained on, the bodies are all dented up and not in place, and they're all spray-painted paint jobs with other sayings and stuff painted onto the sides of the cars.

The rules. #1) Don't smash somebody's driver's side door.

That's it.

I guess they're trying to reduce some possibility of injury, but not all.

Then it turns into a free-for-all and everybody is smashing everybody, trying to be the last car still running and not stuck in the dirt. It was so funny when they got up close to you, you could see straight into their engines because there was no hood, and there would be hoses flying around with smoke pouring out of them. One car got hit and instantly antifreeze was just gushing out. Pillars of smoke come from the cars constantly, things fly off, tires fall off or get turned the wrong way. One car lost all steering capability so it just went forward and reverse trying to hit something. One car ended up sideways on the concrete barrier on the side.

After the round is over they tow all the cars out of the arena and give them some time to try and fix them up enough to get them running again for the next round. In the meantime we watch contests and stuff. One I thought was good was the frozen t-shirt contest. They have dipped these rolled up t-shirts in water and frozen them solid. The contestants have to get that t-shirt open somehow (banging it on the concrete) and put it on. The first person to do so wins some money.

Unfortunately for you I forgot my camera, so you don't get to see funny pictures of demolished cars.

Curb Appeal Galore

This post is to document the journey our outside of our house has been on over the last few years. A lot of these projects I took on this summer, and a few I did earlier. I am so happy with where we are currently at, but still have some plans before it's finished. So, here is what it looked like the day we bought the house. Seven years ago. Don't let the "grass" fool you. It's just weeds. And the ugly brown window trims paired with the ridiculously old glass in the windows and the green brick with maroon grout. Not too pretty. We have since painted the door, trim, and replaced the windows. Also replaced the porch light and house numbers.  This spring we also had a new concrete half circle driveway installed. We live on a busy street and our front yard is useless and our driveway is tiny. So now we have much more functionality, less weeds, and overall happiness. After the driveway was installed, I also ripped out the rest of the grass and installed some decorative...

Going Away Present

Tomorrow is going to be my last day of work at good old Independent Study. It's kind of sad, but also kind of exciting and scary all at the same time. It's sad because I've been here for so long. This is the longest I've ever had one job, and I have made a lot of really good friends here. It's exciting because I will get to have a lot of time off to do whatever I want during the day! And it's scary because I don't have another job lined up yet. After 6 months of applying and interviewing, I'm still none the better for it. I was lucky enough to have one co-worker who cared enough about me and my departure to give me a going-away present. I don't really know why I'm sharing it with you, but here it is: This is the picture he used as a reference to update mine with: Any resemblance? It took him two days to create this picture. He said I was wise enough to become a General Authority. I told him I would have to be a man for that. So he decided to mak...

A couple of days of randomness

I have a couple stories from the past couple days I thought would be fun to share. Yesterday I had a job interview!!! It is for my boss's job at Independent Study. She is having a baby, so I want her job. We shall see how that turns out. After the interview I was waiting in the parking lot for Jarom to come pick me up. While I was waiting there, a lost traveler asked me for directions to the Wilkenson parking lot. I told her to take a right out of the parking lot, then a right at the stop light, and blah blah blah. She thanked my and proceeded on her trek. I then became aware of why she was lost. She took a left out of the parking lot. Not a right, a left. I said right. One left does not equal two rights. It must be hard to get places if you get your lefts and rights mixed up. Poor lady. Yesterday we also decided to drive up to view an apartment that is for rent. We are getting kicked out of ours since our landlord's daughter wants to live there. It is kind of funny cuz m...
