Apartment 23

A few days ago we just had a couple of odd happenings happen at our door. While Jarom was still asleep, there was a knock at the door. And then the doorbell rang. And then it rang again. This person is obviously intent on talking to someone. So I answer the door. Our conversation goes as follows:

Spanish-Speaking Mexican Man: "Hola!"

Non-Spanish Speaking Me: "Hello."

Mexican Man: "Como Estau?" (Is that spelled right? Who knows.)

Me: "....Good?..."

Mexican Man: "Blah blah blah blah ramble ramble rambling, stuff I have no idea what he is saying because guess what? It's SPANISH!" (He then stares at me expectantly waiting for an answer)

Me: "....." (Have I done ANYTHING to suggest the fact that I may possibly know Spanish and understand you?) "Um...I don't speak Spanish."

Mexican Man: "Oh! Lalalalalal tralla la boomtiay (sounding kind of apologetic in his tone, but still going on in Spanish) Lalalla 23 alallala."

Me: "23? Did I hear you say 23? (As he points upstairs.) Yeah, apartment 23 is upstairs. This is FIFTEEN...as the big ONE and the big FIVE on our door clearly say..15. NOT 23."

I don't know much Spanish, but I'm pretty sure that the numbers still look the same in English and Spanish. So if he was looking for 23, why did he knock on 15? And then not even mention 23 from the beginning. He even seemed to know where 23 was already because he was pointing upstairs! But I will never know because, if I haven't made this clear enough yet, I have no idea what he said.

Later on this same day, We get another knock on the door. This time Jarom answers. It happens to be two missionaries.

Jarom: "Hello."

Elder: "Hello. I'm Elder So-and-So and this is Elder So-and-So. Umm....Uhhh....Um. Uh..Stutter Stutter (really, this continued for quite some time)....Is there anything we can do for you??"

Me: in the background trying to stifle my laughter.

Jarom: "Um..No...We're fine thanks."

Elder: (At this point I don't remember exactly what he said, only that he went for awhile, NEVER telling us which church he belonged to. He obviously assumed we weren't members even though Jarom was wearing a huge BYU shirt, because he acted surprised when Jarom told him that we were members).

Elder's Companion: "Oh yes, I see you have pictures of the temple and you getting married in front of the temple..you must be members."

Elder: "Well, do you know anyone around here who isn't a member that we could talk to?"

Jarom: "Yeah, our next door neighbor."

Elder: "Oh? He told us he WAS a member..."

Me: Laughing, "Well, he's not."

(Here comes the kicker)

Elder: "Oh, well.. Do you know where apartment 23 is?"

WHAT IS IT TODAY WITH APARTMENT 23?!?! AND WHY DO PEOPLE KEEP KNOCKING ON DOOR 15 TO FIND 23?

Jarom: "Uh, yeah. It's upstairs."

Elder: "Ok thanks, here's our number in case you need anything."

Uh...Thanks. Is this what your approach is at EVERY door? Cuz I have to say, it was extremely awkward. For Jarom at least. I was laughing the whole time in the background. Hopefully he was just a new missionary and will get more comfortable..soon.

Curb Appeal Galore

This post is to document the journey our outside of our house has been on over the last few years. A lot of these projects I took on this summer, and a few I did earlier. I am so happy with where we are currently at, but still have some plans before it's finished. So, here is what it looked like the day we bought the house. Seven years ago. Don't let the "grass" fool you. It's just weeds. And the ugly brown window trims paired with the ridiculously old glass in the windows and the green brick with maroon grout. Not too pretty. We have since painted the door, trim, and replaced the windows. Also replaced the porch light and house numbers.  This spring we also had a new concrete half circle driveway installed. We live on a busy street and our front yard is useless and our driveway is tiny. So now we have much more functionality, less weeds, and overall happiness. After the driveway was installed, I also ripped out the rest of the grass and installed some decorative...

Going Away Present

Tomorrow is going to be my last day of work at good old Independent Study. It's kind of sad, but also kind of exciting and scary all at the same time. It's sad because I've been here for so long. This is the longest I've ever had one job, and I have made a lot of really good friends here. It's exciting because I will get to have a lot of time off to do whatever I want during the day! And it's scary because I don't have another job lined up yet. After 6 months of applying and interviewing, I'm still none the better for it. I was lucky enough to have one co-worker who cared enough about me and my departure to give me a going-away present. I don't really know why I'm sharing it with you, but here it is: This is the picture he used as a reference to update mine with: Any resemblance? It took him two days to create this picture. He said I was wise enough to become a General Authority. I told him I would have to be a man for that. So he decided to mak...

A couple of days of randomness

I have a couple stories from the past couple days I thought would be fun to share. Yesterday I had a job interview!!! It is for my boss's job at Independent Study. She is having a baby, so I want her job. We shall see how that turns out. After the interview I was waiting in the parking lot for Jarom to come pick me up. While I was waiting there, a lost traveler asked me for directions to the Wilkenson parking lot. I told her to take a right out of the parking lot, then a right at the stop light, and blah blah blah. She thanked my and proceeded on her trek. I then became aware of why she was lost. She took a left out of the parking lot. Not a right, a left. I said right. One left does not equal two rights. It must be hard to get places if you get your lefts and rights mixed up. Poor lady. Yesterday we also decided to drive up to view an apartment that is for rent. We are getting kicked out of ours since our landlord's daughter wants to live there. It is kind of funny cuz m...
